Fear of God

March 21, 2019

I didn’t truly understand what the fear of God was until I sought out scripture and experienced this fear in my own life.

No it’s not this fear where I’m hiding from Him or staying “in line” to not make any sudden movements in fear of Him striking me down if I make one wrong move.

It’s this reverence and love that I have where I NEVER want to be separated from Him. Knowing that at the end of the day no matter what, I always want to know I am with Him, and He is with me.

“To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Proverbs 1:2-7

There are many unhealthy fears and we all are aware of what that is, but there’s also such a thing as healthy fear.

Recently my sister and I saw these cute ponies so we hopped the fence to pet them. They ran to us with the sweetest personalities and looked to us for safety and food. They had so much land to run and play. My mom, Lisa, spoke this past Sunday in church and she notes in her message that the owner isn’t putting them in that piece of land because of mean intentions and not wanting them to be able to live in freedom, but because she loves them and is providing amazing boundaries where they can live and roam free with water and food provided and the ponies trust their owner. If they had the freedom to roam, they wouldn’t have the food or safety, it wouldn’t actually be freedom that was fulfilling. Much like our lives and the “freedom” we often chase, it’s not always the freedom we think we want. His boundaries and love for us go beyond just the borders, He knows ultimately what is good for us.

Lisa spoke about this “Healthy Fear” and she shared her personal experience with this and how God used this to change her life.

I wanted to share this with you all because it was so powerful, and I truly believe the scripture in Proverbs that I mentioned previously, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7
